What Causes Stone to Stain or Etch?

Updated: Aug 10

Marble Staining

Marble is porous, which means it can absorb liquids that can lead to staining. Substances such as coffee, wine, oils, and even water can penetrate the surface if not promptly wiped up. Stains can be deep and difficult to remove, often requiring professional restoration to restore the marble to its original state.

Marble Etching

Marble is a calcium carbonate-based stone, which makes it susceptible to etching when it comes into contact with acidic substances. Common household items like lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and even some cleaning products can cause etching. Etching leaves dull spots or light-colored marks on the surface, which can significantly detract from the marble’s appearance.

Marble Armor is a thin layer of film that can be applied on stone surfaces to prevent staining, etching, and bruising. Available in either a gloss or satin finish, the film is designed specifically to protect surfaces such as countertops, tables, bars, and vanities fabricated from natural stone.

  • Stain Proof: Prevents staining from substances like wine, coffee, and other liquids by creating an impermeable barrier.

  • Etch Proof: Protects against damage from acidic and alkaline products that can etch or dull unprotected marble.

  • Chip Proof: Prevents chips when heavy items are dropped on the stone surface.

  • UV Inhibitor: Reduces yellowing and maintains the clarity of the marble by blocking harmful UV rays.

  • Easy to Replace: Designed for long-term maintenance, allowing for easy replacement if the film gets damaged.
